South West Pathology Service formerly Somerset Pathology Services is an integrated pathology service covering Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton (MPH) and Yeovil District Hospital, Yeovil (YDH). It delivers pathology for most of Somerset and several treatment centres outside Somerset. The service is now run by IPP a private pathology provider with technical staff employed by IPP and medical staff employed by the NHS. Trainees are based at MPH. All the standard and modern diagnostic modalities are available in the laboratory including immunohistochemistry, molecular biology and digital pathology.

The department has two trainees at ST2 level and above. Trainees are attached to individual Consultants on a weekly to fortnightly basis and are given cut up and reporting experience appropriate to their level of competence. Each consultant has a cancer specialised interest and juniors are exposed to resection specimens from most cancer sites and encouraged to attend MDT meetings and review the MDT material. Three Consultants provide an FNA service and juniors are also attached to non-gynaecological cytology as part of the rota. Four Consultants perform autopsies (mainly for the Somerset Coroner) and juniors perform autopsies under supervision when attached to one of these consultants.
